BhamOpenRuns is a community-driven initiative focused on strengthening connections and fostering a sense of brotherhood among basketball enthusiasts in Birmingham. By hosting elite open runs, we provide a positive outlet that encourages participants to come together through their shared passion for the game. Our program emphasizes unity and creates a supportive environment where individuals can enhance their skills and build lasting relationships that extend beyond the basketball court. 

While we celebrate the diversity of our players, our primary focus is on young adults in the Black community, aiming to instill hope and resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Given the alarming rates of violence in Birmingham—most notably the highest murder rate in 2024—we strive to provide positive experiences that inspire hope and create opportunities.

We believe that fostering unity and camaraderie in a controlled court environment can have a profound impact, potentially saving lives beyond the game. Through BhamOpenRuns, we seek to cultivate a vibrant basketball culture that uplifts and inspires the local community, demonstrating that together, we can overcome adversity.

Launched in 2024, BhamOpenRuns has quickly gained traction, attracting over 35 participants for weekly runs at various parks and recreation centers. Our programs are dedicated to uplifting the community and driving positive change by offering a safe space that encourages personal growth and resilience. By providing young men with opportunities to engage in meaningful activities, we help them build valuable relationships and reduce the risk of violence, especially in response to Birmingham's rising crime rates. Notably, we have maintained a record free of violence or theft at our events, highlighting the positive impact of our initiatives and the strong sense of community we are fostering.

In just the past 90 days, we have achieved remarkable success, including:
- Over 520 followers
- More than 435 players participating
- Over 300,000 views on our Instagram
- Reaching over 65,000 accounts

Additionally, our open runs serve as a platform for showcasing local talent, welcoming musicians, dancers, and fraternity groups to share their artistry. This celebration of diverse skills not only highlights local talent but also enhances community engagement and youth involvement, allowing participants to connect and expand their horizons. We are committed to nurturing all forms of creativity, making our events vibrant hubs for talent and collaboration.

Event during Martin Luther King weekend, coming together to honor his legacy through the power of sports, fostering connections and spreading positivity. As Dr. King famously said, "Darkness can't drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate can't drive out hate; only love can do that."

“I’m from the west side and I used to come up here to play basketball all the time. Seeing my younger brother Orlando put something like this together is about unity, not just us out here playing basketball. After traveling all over the world playing basketball, we’ve seen so much that happens. When we are home, we want to see something good in our city. He could’ve easily done this anywhere, but he takes pride in our own city. Him doing it here means a lot.

BHAMOPENRUNS SERIES- HeziGod Takeover

BhamOpenRuns series event featuring the top street baller, Ryan Carter, known as "Hezi God." This was a unique opportunity for players to match up against him and compete in a tournament-style format. A former MVP of the Big 3, Hezi God boasts over 450,000 followers on social media, making him a prominent figure in the basketball community. Councilor Crystal Smitherman, team District 6 team won the tournament.
